Emergency Lighting: Code Requirements and Purpose

Emergency lighting activates automatically when normal lighting fails during a power outage or fire, providing illumination along egress routes. Building codes require it in all commercial buildings, multifamily buildings above a certain height, and assembly occupancies.

Battery-backed emergency lighting must provide at least 90 minutes of illumination at a minimum of 1 foot-candle at floor level along the egress path. This allows occupants to navigate exits safely even in heavy smoke.

In homes, emergency lighting is not typically required by code, but whole-home battery backup systems and plug-in emergency lights provide similar benefits. These are especially valuable in homes with elderly or mobility-impaired occupants.
