Safe Storage of Flammable Materials at Home and Work
Flammable materials require proper storage to prevent catastrophic fires. At home, common flammable materials include gasoline, paint thinners, propane, and aerosol cans. At work, the list expands to include industrial solvents, laboratory chemicals, and pressurized gases. Each category has specific storage requirements.
Gasoline should be stored only in UL-approved safety cans in a cool, well-ventilated area outside the home and away from ignition sources. Never store gasoline in basements, attached garages, or vehicles. A maximum of one gallon for lawn equipment is the practical limit for most home storage.
Workplace flammable storage must comply with OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard and applicable NFPA codes. Indoor flammable storage cabinets limit the quantity of flammable liquids that can be stored in a work area. Outdoor storage must be in approved areas with appropriate fire suppression.
