School Fire Safety Requirements
Schools must conduct fire drills at least once per month in most jurisdictions. These drills familiarize students and staff with evacuation routes and build the muscle memory needed to evacuate quickly during an actual emergency.
Key elements include: clearly marked exits, illuminated exit signs, unobstructed hallways, annual inspection of fire suppression and alarm systems, and staff training on evacuation procedures for students with disabilities.
Effective fire drills test whether students know to stop and stay out. Post-drill debriefings identify problems and reinforce learning. Documentation of each drill is typically required by fire marshals.
